Fiber Cables - Single-Mode & Multi-Mode
What is the difference between single-mode fiber optic cable and multi-mode fiber cable? Single-mode fiber's core is 8-10 microns in diameter and typically used in long distance transmissions. Multi-mode fiber's core comes in several diameter sizes, however, it it much larger in diameter than single mode. Multi-mode is capable of more bandwidth and used in shorter transmission distances; typically a campus or building.
